As technology advances, so does the way we work. “Old” working habits are continually dropped as companies strive to find more productive ways of working. As I’m sure we’re all aware, Cloud Technology and Salesforce Implementation are providing companies with more opportunities than ever to optimise processes and energise workflows, this is no different with Salesforce Paths.Paths are often taken for granted, but exploring the full range of possibilities that they present can be highly beneficial to your organisation. We’ll explore some of these and talk you through how to set them up.As Salesforce state, Paths “guide your sales users through each stage of your company’s sales processes. Paths help users stay focused on important tasks so they can close deals or complete work quickly”.

How to enable Salesforce Paths:

Although you may already see Paths in your Salesforce Org does not necessarily mean that they have been activated. By activating them, you’ll be able to see more elements in the setup menu.To enable paths, go to the Lightning Experience setup and search for “path”. You’ll find “Path settings” under “User interface”. Once there, click the green button. From here, you’ll be able to create and control paths.

How to create your own Salesforce Path:

Once you’ve enabled paths, you need to create one. We recommend replacing standard paths with custom ones. While the chevron will stay the same, creating a custom one will allow you to:

  • Add fields to any path stage for easy access and editing
  • Add guidance for success to any path stage

These two features will make fields much more visible and accessible, saving yourself and your CRM operators time and effort.Once you’ve clicked “Create Path”, you’ll be taken to another screen where you can set the path name, it’s API name, the object, the record type and the picklist used.Path chevrons are based on the picklists, the chevrons are displayed in order of the picklist values. As each path will only run on one object, make sure to select the correct one when creating it.The record type choice allows you to choose which record type the path is assigned to.

Once complete, you’ll be taken back to the main screen. Click on each stage to configure which fields to display, and to add the guidance for success. You’re limited to 5 fields per stage but you can add images in the guidance.

Lastly, make sure to activate your path. Load your object in lightning experience and then you’re done - the path is live!Paths are a great way of exposing fields for each stage, and for guiding your users through the application. Easy to configure and setup, paths are available in both standard and custom objects - remember to set these up in your org!Need more information about Salesforce?
